Guess the country by its flag: a fun quiz

Fun & Entertainment · 6 min read

Flags are a kind of visual shorthand: a few colours and shapes that say "this is us". Some are instantly recognisable, while others look suspiciously alike. This quiz describes fifteen flags in words, so you can play on paper with no images needed. Read each clue, make your guess, and scroll down to the answers section to score yourself.

How to play

Write down your answers as you go and do not peek at the answer key. Score one point for each correct answer. Playing with family, you can take turns reading questions aloud and award bonus points for naming the capital city as well. Questions get harder as you go.

Round 1: warm-up (easy)

  1. A white flag with a large red circle in the centre.
  2. Three equal horizontal bands of saffron, white and green, with a blue wheel of 24 spokes in the middle.
  3. A dark blue flag with a small Union Jack in the top-left corner, a large seven-pointed white star beneath it, and five smaller white stars forming a cross pattern on the right.
  4. A square red flag with a white cross of equal-length arms in the centre. The country is known for chocolate, watches and the Alps.
  5. A red field with a white maple leaf in the centre, flanked by two white vertical bands.

Round 2: medium

  1. Horizontal stripes of black, red and gold, from top to bottom.
  2. A green flag with a large yellow diamond in the centre containing a blue globe with a white band and a motto.
  3. Three equal horizontal bands of red, white and blue from top to bottom, with no emblem. The country is in Europe and is famous for tulips and windmills.
  4. Three vertical bands of green, white and red, with a coat of arms on the white band (an eagle on a cactus eating a snake).
  5. A blue background with a yellow cross offset to the left side, extending to the edges.

Round 3: tricky

  1. The only national flag that is not a rectangle or square: two stacked pennant shapes, crimson with a blue border, bearing a moon and a sun. The country contains Mount Everest.
  2. Two equal horizontal bands, red on top and white below, with no emblem. The country is a Southeast Asian archipelago of thousands of islands whose capital is Jakarta.
  3. A white flag with a blue Star of David between two blue horizontal stripes.
  4. A plain red flag with a gold hammer and sickle and a gold-bordered red star in the upper hoist corner. This state no longer exists, having dissolved in 1991.
  5. A green flag with a white crescent moon and star on the left and a white vertical band at the hoist side.

Some clues here were intentionally tricky, and a few depend on knowing neighbouring flags. If you got an answer different from the key, check the fun fact for why.

Score yourself

  • 0-5: Getting started. Try again after reading the fun facts.
  • 6-10: A solid traveller's knowledge.
  • 11-13: You are a flag whiz.
  • 14-15: Official vexillologist, the formal name for a person who studies flags.

Tricks to tell lookalike flags apart

Some flags are easy to confuse. Indonesia and Monaco use red over white, but Poland reverses it to white over red. Romania, Chad and Andorra look similar with blue, yellow and red stripes, though the shades and emblems differ. Ireland has green, white and orange, while Ivory Coast has orange, white and green in reverse. Remembering one distinguishing feature, such as the order of colours or the presence of an emblem, is the best approach.

Tip: Look at the colour order from the hoist side (the side nearest the pole) or from the top. Many lookalikes differ by this single detail.

Final thoughts

Flags carry history, from independence struggles to religion and geography. Make your own version of this quiz using images from an atlas, or ask each family member to write five clues for the others. It is a good way to learn geography without feeling like homework, and the best flag stories often come from the arguments about the answers.
